We talk about "wine night" at the PTA social. Why can’t I talk about cannabis?

I never know how to approach a mom about whether or not she uses cannabis. I’ve thought about showing up in a shirt with a giant leaf on it just to see how she reacts.

Is Cannabis the same as marijuana/pot/weed?
Think of it like Sean Combs/Puff Daddy/P.Diddy/Diddy — a whole bunch of different names that all mean the same thing. What you’re consuming is the dried flowers of the cannabis plant, which contain psychoactive compounds like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), as well as other active compounds like cannabidiol (CBD). More on these acronyms below!
So what’s the difference between THC and CBD?
THC is the compound in cannabis most commonly associated with a euphoric sensation that comes from a psychoactive response. CBD is considered “non-psychotropic” (so you won’t really feel a high), and you’ll see it in everything from drinks to creams and ointments. THC products can only be obtained legally through a dispensary, while CBD products can be found at drugstores and grocery stores, as well as dispensaries.

What are the different kinds of Cannabis?
Cannabis plants come in infinite varieties, which fall into three main subspecies: Sativa, Indica, and Ruderalis. We’ll let Curaleaf explain the science behind each one, but here are the ones we’ll focus on:
Sativas tend to provide a euphoric, head-forward, cerebral high that’s the less sedating variety. You’ll hear words like uplifting and inspiring from sativa fans who use it when starting a project, or settling in for a giggly chat with a friend. (Remember it like this: sativa/achieve-a.)
Indica commonly provides more of a body high, with calming, soothing attributes. Indica fans often use it to wind down at the end of the night, without worrying about a hangover headache when they wake up. (Remember it like this: indica/in da couch)
Hybrids are a combo and balance of the effects of sativa and indica, with a wider range of effects coming into play, based on the ratios of each. (Think of a hybrid car. Sometimes it’s using energy to speed up, and sometimes it’s just coasting!)

Do I smoke it? Eat it? I’ve heard you can put a drop under your tongue?
The short answer is yes — you can do all of the above. It’s really a matter of preference and convenience. Here are some of the deets:
Inhalation is done by smoking or vaporizing (vaping). You can smoke ground raw buds (pre-rolled versions are perfect for beginners) or use a more discreet vape device, which heats up cannabis oils and activates their effect. In both cases, you’ll start to feel the onset within about 20 minutes, and the effects will last about 3 hours.
Edibles are eaten (duh) and often come in all different forms of tablets, chews, and ingestibles. (Curaleaf even has some delicious cannabis cooking ideas!) They have a slower onset — about 30-120 minutes — but can also have a stronger effect. So start slow & low (a small dose) and give it some time to kick in before you start saying “I don’t feel anything.” Edibles also last longer, with effects being felt for about 6-8 hours.
Oral use is a sublingual under-the-tongue dropper method, which takes effect in about 15-45 minutes and can last about 3-5 hours.
Do I smoke it? Eat it? I’ve heard you can put a drop under your tongue? >

First off, good for her! We could all use a little more calm these days. But keep in mind that cannabis isn’t one-size-fits-all, and what works for one person might not work the same way for you. That’s why Curaleaf takes a personalized approach to pairing people and products. It’s all about finding just the right product to help you meet your unique cannabis goals.
